In Memoriam

Nick Marinovich

1952 – 2022  •  Former CABOC President

“The noblest motive is the public good”. These words best describe Nick Marinovich’s life belief as he pursued his work passion. Nick was born December 8, 1952 and passed away October 27, 2022 after a short battle with cancer. Nick was a former President of the California Association of Bond Oversight Committees (CABOC) as well as an active member for its predecessor California League of Bond Oversight Committees (CaLBOC).

Nick was often the voice behind the “Help Desk”, who listened thoughtfully to questions or concerns from Citizen Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC) members seeking advice, counsel and guidance on how to perform their duties to oversee bond projects. Possessing a wealth of experience from serving on oversight committees, Nick could detect abuse and misuse of construction bond projects. A notable example of his work dealt with the Sweetwater School District where his testimony to the San Diego Criminal Grand jury led to the investigation and conviction of board members and bond consultants. Nick believed bond measures should always benefit the kids through facilities construction and upgrades. Working with CABOC, Nick was instrumental in developing training materials as well as a YouTube video describing the role and responsibility of Citizens Bond Oversight Committees.

Nick earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics – his career spanning decades as a Project Manager in the Public Works Department for San Diego County. The four projects that he was proudest of were the San Diego County Operations Center, the Kaiser Hospital in La Mesa, the San Diego Hall of Justice and San Diego County Waterfront Park where he overcome bureaucracy and politics to deliver them for the “public good”.

Living in San Diego, Nick loved his sports teams – the baseball Padres and the football Chargers, but most passionately he was a horse racing fan at Del Mar, Santa Anita in Los Angeles, and during his many annual pilgrimages to the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs back East.

Nick leaves behind a beloved partner, Marta; a cherished son and daughter, Aaron and Elizabeth, along with several grandchildren.

Nick will be missed by all of his family, all those who were lucky enough to call him a friend, and all those who worked with him to serve the public good.
